Peter’s masterful skill in depicting texture, light, form and perspective when it comes to various objects, including opaque, colourful balloons, apples or a broken chair, offers new dynamism in the still life genre; his ability to create a presence for these objects is evident, creating a physicality with his white backgrounds and treatment of shadows and light which is demonstrated by the chair in Dilapidated 2. Peter’s interest in materials such as wood and crumpled paper, and his ability to depict their inherent qualities, is also evident throughout his body of work
Much of Peter’s work is a symbolic interpretation of environmental conditions painted in a realistic manner. The artist’s work ranges from highly detailed and precisely observed objects, both natural and manmade, in the vein of botanical and scientific illustration, to views of landscape seen through windows and doors with objects sitting silently in the foreground, such as a kite lying motionless on steps. They are scenes of curiosity and enigma which provoke interpretation of the viewer, in the tradition of the best symbolist painters.
